KelliJo_ProctorYou could easily fill a solid weekend (and then some) enjoying fun activities with your little ones in the Proctor District. I put together a sample itinerary for a Saturday, but this is really just to get you started!

Breakfast: What’s on the menu?

If you’re lucky enough to be hanging out in Proctor on a Saturday morning, then you can have breakfast at the Proctor Farmer’s Market. The options are endless— healthy smoothies, enormous scones, fresh fruit and juice, local coffee… plus, how often do you get live music with your breakfast?! If it’s not a Saturday, then grab some delicious gluten-free muffins and a latte from Metropolitan Market— they have everything there, including a patios, perfect for a sunny day.

Time for Toys

On the way to the Farmer’s Market, it’s likely your kids noticed the lively front window at Teaching Toys. I’m sure they won’t let you avoid stopping by… and really, you don’t want to miss it anyway! Tons of educational games, books and toys will keep any curious kid busy for at least an hour in there. (Tip: Searching for a birthday party gift? They wrap presents for free!)

Books Books Books

And next… some quiet time. The Wheelock Library is just around the corner, and everyone can check out a whole bag of books, movies and CDs to dive into at home later. The library (and other Tacoma Public Libraries) offers free storytimes and other kids’ activities; just check out their schedule for dates and times.

Picnic in the Park

KelliJo_PugetParkLunch options are aplenty in Proctor— pick up a bite at Capers or Subway and you can all walk a couple of blocks to Puget Park for a picnic. There’s room to run and even some kid-approved play equipment. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can drop down onto the trail there that leads all the way down to the Ruston Way Waterfront— it’s really a great hike for the whole family. Plus, the historic and newly renovated Washington Elementary School (opening in fall of 2014!) has a playground that is the perfect place for kids to get out some of their energy!

Dinner & Dessert

One of Proctor’s strong points is all of its family-friendly dining options. Craving Mexican? Check out La Fondita. For some Italian comfort food, drop by Pomodoro and EuropaProctor Frozen Yogurt is a must-try spot, too— if you have room for dessert!

Evening Enjoyment

In the evening, take in a movie at the Blue Mouse Theatre (opened way back in 1923!) or ask for a lane equipped with kid bumpers at the Chalet Bowl (the longest operating bowling alley in Washington state).

What do you and your kids like to do in Proctor? I’d love to hear about your favorite activities in the comments!
