Tacoma’s Community Gardens

TacomaCommunityGardenTacoma’s claim to fame may not be its beautiful gardens (yet!), but in my book, it’s certainly a rising star in the world of horticulture! Tacoma is home to over 35 community gardens, 11 of which are on property owned by the City of Tacoma.

What’s a community garden?

A community garden can be many things, but at a glance, it is just as it sounds: Put simply, community gardens are a place where the community can come together and work to grow fresh fruits, veggies and even flowers!

Who participates? How can I get involved?

Anyone can! Gardens are often managed by Pierce County’s Metro Parks, schools, churches, and a whole host of other community groups and organizations. You can learn more about specific gardens on the handy Community Gardens Program page of the Pierce Conservation District’s website.

What are the benefits?

The list is a long one, but here are a few of the great benefits:

  • Provide community members with access to healthier food, and more of it
  • Build communities that are safer and stronger
  • Work to fight climate change
