At Home in Tacoma

Boating season is just about here, and North Tacoma is a prime location for those boating enthusiasts out there! There are multiple spots from which you can launch your boat in Tacoma. I prefer the Point Defiance launch because it is fast and convenient, and it offers several ramps!

Once you are afloat, the destinations that are nearby are countless. Within 20 minutes or less, you can enjoy the sites and experiences below and be back by dinnertime!

1. Thea Foss Waterway

The Foss offers a great venue for slow cruising, conversation and stunning views of Mount Rainier and our fair city. Thirsty? Tie up at Johnny’s Dock (A Tacoma classic since 1953), The Social Bar and Grill or Rock The Dock to participate in Happy Hour. If you are lucky, you might witness a Dragon Boat practice. You can also get an up close look at that sailboat you’ve always wanted!

2. Quartermaster Harbor

Another great place for simply cruising and taking in the scenery. It’s a hot spot for dropping your crab pots, in that secret spot your uncle told you about. After crab pot dropping & dodging, venture further into the harbor where it is a little more calm and pop the kids and the inner tube into the water for a splashy spin.

3. Gig Harbor

This might seem like a no brainer, but it must be included! There are a variety of places to dock your vessel—big or small—in the Harbor. Spend the day shopping along the waterfront, bring along a picnic to enjoy afloat, or grab a table a the Tides Tavern (a local favorite), and give their famous fish n chips a go! If you have brought along your paddle board, the harbor is a great place join the other paddle enthusiasts.

4. The Narrows Bridges and Salmon Beach

Been across the Narrows Bridge hundreds of times? How about under it? Take a ride under the bridges for a unique perspective. Tour the Salmon Beach waterfront community while on your way to Boathouse 19. Gas up at the Marina, and then tie up and partake in a delicious lunch on the deck. Venture a little further and spy the Chambers Bay Golf Course from a whole new perspective!

5. Dash Point State Park

The beautiful park is a popular kayaking and camping destination and features over 3000 feet of salty shoreline and superb people watching. It is not uncommon to be in the company of harbor seals, porpoises or even an occasional whale on your trip from Point Defiance to the park and back again.
